J. Braxton Powell retired from the position of State Treasurer of Virginia on December 31, and thus will no longer serve on the VHDA Board of Commissioners. Powell began his career in state government with the Virginia Employment Commission in 1968 as a field service representative in the Roanoke office. He moved over to the Treasury Department in 1983 and was appointed Deputy State Treasurer in 2000 by Gov. Jim Gilmore and reappointed in 2004 by Gov. Mark Warner.
Gov. Timothy Kaine appointed Powell to be State Treasurer, and a VHDA Board member, in January 2006.
Powell also received a formal resolution recognizing that “the Authority has greatly benefited from his advice and guidance as a member of the Audit and Operations Committees of the Board of Commissioners. And that by his sound judgment and recommendations, he has assured that the financial decisions of the Authority have furthered the goals of the Authority in a prudent and responsible manner.”
