VHDA Executive Director Honored with Humanitarian Award

In March, the Virginia Beach Human Rights Commission (HRC) hosted its 16th annual Human Rights Awards program and honored the memory of the late Daniel Matthew Stone, former Department of Social Services Director, by awarding the Daniel M. Stone Humanitarian Award to VHDA’s Executive Director Susan Dewey.

“While I did not know Mr. Stone personally, I know that his contributions as Director of Social Services left Virginia Beach a much better place for children, teens and parents. The fact that an award has been named in his honor says much about his dedication to improving the lives of others,” said Dewey.

“I am humbled that the Commission chose me for this award. Mr. Stone’s accomplishments were many, and I – as well as the VHDA staff – will strive to uphold his legacy of serving those in need.”

The HRC advocates for the human rights of the city’s residents by providing educational programming, public forums, and assistance to those whose rights may have been violated. The annual awards ceremony recognized residents and organizations that have worked to promote cultural diversity, social awareness and human rights in the community.
