| Richmond, VA - Recently, a group of housing providers expressed their appreciation to Gov. Mark R. Warner for issuing a proclamation declaring June as Homeownership Month in the Commonwealth of Virginia. During the year 2001, the United States enjoyed a record 67.8 percent homeownership rate. The homeownership rate for Virginia in 2001 trended slightly higher at 68.1 percent. In his proclamation, Gov. Warner said, "Homeownership strengthens families, stabilizes neighborhoods, builds communities and promotes personal well-being. Homeownership also fosters economic prosperity for families and communities and generates economic growth." The Governor expressed his appreciation that "VHDA, the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Department of Agriculture/Rural Development are actively engaged in increasing homeownership opportunities for the people of the Commonwealth." He further praised the efforts of the Virginia Housing Study Commission and its efforts to recommend strategies that will foster homeownership opportunities for minorities and new immigrants. The Governor also thanked numerous public and private housing partners including real estate professionals, homebuilders, mortgage bankers and brokers, local governments including housing authorities, and housing developers for being vital to fostering homeownership in Virginia. Speaking on behalf of her colleagues in the government housing sector, VHDA Executive Director Susan Dewey said, "We are very appreciative of Governor Warner's recognition of the good work being done by so many agencies, organizations and individuals across the Commonwealth. We all strive to provide Virginians with a chance to own a home, and the opportunity to establish roots within various communities." "While 2001 was a record year for homeownership, all of us remain committed to helping even more Virginians obtain affordable homeownership." Dewey said. |
