More than 40 percent of those currently living in homeless shelters in Virginia have jobs, but their wages are insufficient to afford housing. In addition seniors, who live on fixed incomes, and people with disabilities, who need an affordable place to live that helps them live more independently, also struggle to find quality, affordable housing.
With 30 percent of Virginia’s 22,503 charitable non-profits delivering a broad spectrum of housing, disaster relief and family support services, VHDA recognizes the unique and significant role non-profit providers play in addressing housing needs not being met by traditional market resources.
We also understand that capacity building is an ongoing challenge faced by non-profits that rely on external funding, such as grants and subsidies, to create and sustain critical programs.
REACH Virginia assists housing organizations within the Commonwealth’s non-profit community in meeting their mission with:
- Low-interest rate financing and resource facilitation to other funding sources.
- Outreach and liaison to determine need and, where possible, adjust our programs to meet those needs.
- Training and technical assistance that helps build capacity.
