How to get started

You can view details of an organization by clicking on its name or visit its website by clicking on its website address.

Search by Location:
Searching by location shows all the housing organizations that serve a particular jurisdiction. This list excludes state and federal programs, as well as those organizations that have designated themselves as serving the entire state (these resources can be viewed using the left-hand menu, see below)

To see what services are available in a specific jurisdiction click on "Search by Location" at the top of the left menu. A map of Virginia appears. Either click down to the jurisdiction you are interested in or use the drop-down menu at the bottom of the map page.

Once a jurisdiction has been selected, all the organizations that have been identified as serving that specific jurisdiction will appear, beginning with the five 'local government resources.' These standard resources are available in every jurisdiction and include:

1. City/County Administrator
2. Local Social Services Office
3. Local Area Agency on Aging
4. Virginia Legal Services Local Office
5. Local Community Service Board

Following these resources are the non-profit organizaitons serving the jurisdiciton. .

Using the left-hand menu:
All the information in the directory can be accessed using the left-hand menu. When clicked, each item expands to show the agencies or categories of resources that belong to that item. Click again and the progams or organizations that belong to that agency or category of resources displayed to the right.

State and Federal housing programs can be found under their sponsoring agency (e.g. HUD).

Non-profit organizations serving all of Virginia can be found under the Non-Profit listing on the left menu. The non-profit listing also includes domestic violence resources, Habitat for Humanity affiliates, homeless shelters and providers, as well as a list of all Non-Profits and Local Government Resources.

Sustainable Building Resources, VHDA's Homeownership Education Program, and Multicultural Housing Resources are also accessed via the left-hand menu. Please note these resources are in .pdf format and their content is not searched when using the search function described below.

Using the Search Function:
This feature allows you to search the directory's database by resource title, description or contact. Use the drop-down box to choose which databse field to search, then type in your search criteria and hit go. The names of the organizations and programs that match the criteria will be displayed.

Organization Name:
You can search for a program or organization by name. This is useful if you are looking for a specific organization or program that you already know all or part of the name for and want to find quickly. Leaving it blank and hiting go produces a list of all the directory's resources.

Description:
This searches the description of the organizations and programs in the directory. This is useful if you are looking for a specific type of assistance, such as "plumbing" or "emergency shelter".

Contact:
This searches the primary contact person(s) listed for each organization and program (e.g. the executive director). This is useful if you know a person's name, but are not sure with what organization they are affiliated.
